Kapsabet, Nandi County – This morning, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, paid a courtesy call on Nandi County Governor, H.E. Hon. Stephen Sang, at the county headquarters. The meeting marked a significant step towards fostering stronger collaboration between the national and county governments in the healthcare sector. The discussions centered on enhancing service delivery, improving healthcare infrastructure, and advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Nandi County.
The CS Dr. Barasa, PS Mary Muthoni and their delegation are in our county for the World Oral Health Day celebration being held at KMTC Mosoriot Campus.
Dr. Barasa commended Governor Sang for his commitment to improving healthcare services in the county, noting the progress made in recent years. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the national and county governments to address healthcare challenges and ensure that all Kenyans have access to quality and affordable healthcare services.
“Universal Health Coverage is a key pillar of the government’s agenda, and we are committed to working closely with county governments to achieve this goal. Nandi County has shown remarkable progress, and we are here to support and strengthen these efforts,” said Dr. Barasa.
Governor Sang expressed his gratitude for the visit and reiterated his administration’s dedication to improving healthcare services for the residents of Nandi County. He highlighted some of the key achievements in the county’s healthcare sector, including the construction of new health facilities, the recruitment of additional healthcare workers, and the implementation of community-based health programs.
“We are committed to ensuring that every resident of Nandi County has access to quality healthcare services. Our partnership with the national government is crucial in achieving this goal, and we appreciate the support and guidance from the Ministry of Health,” said Governor Sang.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed several initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare collaboration, including: Capacity Building, Infrastructure Development, Health Financing, Community Engagement and Technology Integration.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both leaders to work closely together to address the healthcare challenges in Nandi County and to ensure the successful implementation of UHC. Dr. Barasa assured Governor Sang of the national government’s continued support and collaboration in achieving these goals.

The camp provides free dental and medical services to hundreds of residents, addressing critical oral health issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental complications. Blood donations, Medical screenings for general health conditions are also conducted, ensuring a holistic approach to healthcare delivery. The event is particularly timely, as it will culminate in the commissioning of a new dental center and the launch of a community oral health program at the Mosoriot KMTC on World Oral Health Day, to be observed on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Earlier today, H.E. Governor Stephen Sang held a productive discussion with key partners, including Lynelle DeRoo, CEO of BFL International, Moses Kiptanui, Director of KMPDC, Dr. Beatrice Achieng, President of the Oral Health Association of Kenya, and other stakeholders. The County Government of Nandi extends its heartfelt appreciation to BFL International, led by Lynelle DeRoo, for their instrumental role in driving the initiative. The consignment was received at the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital this morning and flagged off for distribution by Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot. During the handover ceremony, Dr. Cheruiyot commended KEMSA for its timely delivery, which aligns with the county’s efforts to maintain a steady supply of drugs and medical supplies. She emphasized the importance of the delivery in strengthening healthcare services and urged residents to take advantage of the improved services at county health facilities.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health and Sanitation, Dr. Angeline Kirui, reiterated the county government’s dedication to ensuring a continuous supply of drugs and medical essentials. She assured residents that the county is working closely with KEMSA and other stakeholders to address any gaps in the supply chain and improve healthcare delivery.
The Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation, Fredrick Kiptum, also expressed gratitude to KEMSA for its consistent support, noting that the agency’s refill rate for drugs in Nandi County stands at an impressive 70-90%. He highlighted the importance of this partnership in maintaining the county’s healthcare standards and ensuring that residents receive timely and effective medical care.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary for Nandi East and Tinderet Branch, Mr. Bonface Tenai, was also on hand to offer support to the affected students and their families. He urged school administrators and parents to prioritize the safety of learners, especially during travel to and from school. Mr. Tenai also called for increased awareness campaigns on road safety targeting both drivers and passengers.
As the students recover from their injuries, the community is reminded of the collective responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users. The Chief Officers also took time to assess the solar water project, which has been a critical source of clean water for the dispensary and the surrounding community. Jonah Tireito expressed satisfaction with the project’s impact, noting that it serves over 350 households and four institutions, including two schools, the dispensary, and a local church. However, it was revealed that the existing water pump is faulty and requires replacement. Tireito assured the community that the issue would be addressed promptly to restore the project’s full functionality.

As plans for the maternity wing take shape and the faulty water pump is set to be replaced, the residents of Kilibwoni Ward can look forward to better healthcare services and improved access to clean water, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the county government and local stakeholders.

One of the flagship projects is a modern theatre, which is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide surgical services. Once completed, the theatre will offer a wide range of specialized surgical procedures, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment. In addition to the theatre, is the new hospital wards which is set to increase the facility’s bed capacity, enabling it to accommodate more patients. This upgrade is expected to improve the overall efficiency of service delivery, ensuring that patients receive timely and adequate care.
