NANDI COUNTY HOSTS NATIONAL WORLD ORAL HEALTH DAY AT KMTC MOSORIOT CAMPUS
Today, Nandi County hosted the National World Oral Health Day celebrations at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Mosoriot Campus. The event, marked by a series of groundbreaking initiatives, underscored the county’s commitment to advancing oral healthcare and improving the well-being of its residents. The theme of the day, “A Healthy Mouth for a Healthy Life,” resonated deeply as stakeholders gathered to celebrate progress and chart a path toward a brighter future for oral health in Kenya.
The highlight of the event was the commissioning of a state-of-the-art dental centre at KMTC Mosoriot. Equipped with modern dental technology and staffed by skilled professionals, the facility is set to revolutionize oral healthcare in the region. Not only will it serve KMTC students, but it will also provide much-needed dental services to the local community, addressing long-standing gaps in access to quality care. The centre symbolizes hope for thousands who have struggled with dental issues, offering services ranging from routine check-ups to advanced treatments.
In addition to the dental centre, the launch of the Community Oral Health Programme marked another significant milestone. KMTC Mosoriot became the second institution in the country, after KMTC Nairobi Campus, to implement this innovative training program. The initiative focuses on preventive dental care, public awareness campaigns, and the training of more oral health professionals. By equipping students with the skills to address oral health challenges in underserved communities, the program aims to bridge the gap in dental care access and empower communities with knowledge on maintaining good oral hygiene.
Speaking at the event, Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah Barasa, the Chief Guest, emphasized the importance of oral health as an integral part of overall well-being. “A healthy mouth is not just about a beautiful smile; it is a gateway to a healthy body and mind. Today’s event is a testament to our collective commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to quality oral healthcare,” she said. Dr. Barasa commended Nandi County for its leadership in prioritizing oral health and urged other counties to follow suit.
Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni echoed these sentiments, highlighting the government’s efforts to integrate oral health into the broader healthcare system. “The Community Oral Health Programme is a game-changer. By training more professionals and raising awareness, we are not only addressing current challenges but also preventing future ones,” she said.
Nandi Deputy Governor Dr Yulita Cheruiyot expressed her enthusiasm for the initiatives. She praised the collaboration between the national government, KMTC, and Nandi County, noting that the dental centre and training program would have a transformative impact on the region. “This is a proud moment for Nandi County. We are setting an example for the rest of the country by investing in the health and future of our people,” she said.
Chesumei MP Hon. Paul Biego, emphasized the institution’s role in shaping the future of healthcare in Kenya. “KMTC Mosoriot is not just a training ground; it is a hub for innovation and community service. With the new dental centre and the Community Oral Health Programme, we are equipping our students to be agents of change in their communities,” he said.
The event also featured free dental check-ups and oral health education sessions for attendees, further emphasizing the importance of preventive care. Community members expressed their gratitude for the new initiatives, with many noting that the dental centre would save them the time and cost of traveling to distant facilities for treatment.
As the celebrations concluded, the CEC Member for Health and Sanitation Dr Angeline Kirui reaffirmed the county’s commitment to healthcare excellence. “Today is a milestone, but it is also a reminder of the work that lies ahead. We will continue to prioritize health and well-being, ensuring that every resident of Nandi County has access to the care they deserve,” she said.
The National World Oral Health Day celebrations at KMTC Mosoriot Campus were more than just an event; they were a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and community-focused healthcare. With the new dental centre and the Community Oral Health Programme, Nandi County is paving the way for a healthier, brighter future – one smile at a time.
