In a swift and coordinated response to a tragic road accident that occurred along the Nandi Hills – Kopere – Chemelil road, Dr. Angeline Kirui, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Health in Nandi County, joined other leaders to provide support and ensure the well-being of the victims. The accident, which took place at Chepsangor, involved a matatu carrying students from St. Mary’s Girls Tachasis and St. John Tachasis in Tinderet Sub-County.
The students were returning to school after the half-term break when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that the matatu lost control, leading to the tragic incident. County Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, and the injured students were rushed to Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital for immediate medical attention. Those with critical injuries were referred to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for specialized care. Fortunately, all the students are now reported to be in stable condition, thanks to the timely and efficient response by medical personnel and emergency services.
Dr. Angeline Kirui, who oversees the health docket in Nandi County, was among the first responders to arrive at Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital to assess the situation and ensure that the students received the best possible care. She commended the medical staff for their swift action and emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
Also present at the hospital was Tinderet Member of Parliament, Hon. Julius Melly, who expressed his concern over the frequent accidents along the Nandi Hills – Kopere – Chemelil road. He called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly regarding overloading and speeding, to safeguard the lives of road users. Hon. Melly also pledged to work with relevant authorities to improve road infrastructure and safety measures.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary for Nandi East and Tinderet Branch, Mr. Bonface Tenai, was also on hand to offer support to the affected students and their families. He urged school administrators and parents to prioritize the safety of learners, especially during travel to and from school. Mr. Tenai also called for increased awareness campaigns on road safety targeting both drivers and passengers.
As the students recover from their injuries, the community is reminded of the collective responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users. The incident serves as a stark reminder that road safety is not just a government mandate but a shared obligation that requires the active participation of every individual.
