NANDI TEA/SAMEER AFRICA HALF MARATHON
The Nandi Tea/ Sameer Africa Group in collaboration with County Government of Nandi is organizing a marathon to take place on the 20th of March 2016.The Half Marathon is scheduled to start at Kapsabet town and end at Nandi Hills town’s Kapsiwon Grounds. Established in 2015 under the guidance of Sameer Africa Group Chairman Naushad Merali, this Marathon will henceforth be an annual event, supporting the construction of a 26,000 seater stadium in Nandi Hills. The foundation station for the Nandi Hills Stadium will also be laid on that same day.
The proposed theme for the event is “Nurturing future Champions through Tea” and its objectives are as follows:
To create opportunity for the world champions to interact with the community while mentoring young athletes.
To unlock the sports and cultural tourism within Nandi County.
To appreciate the rich agro-tourism potential that Nandi County presents.
It will consist of individual runners, walkers, family runs and Corporate teams i.e Half-marathon (21km)for Men and Women, Corporate races(5Km), School race(6km), Persons with Disabilities(2Km) and Executive races(2Km).
Sameer Africa Group will sponsor the Nandi Tea Marathon in 2017, with a Sh10million grant showing their commitment to the cause. “We have had discussions with the Nandi County Government and it is with this that we announce a sponsorship of Sh10million for the Nandi Tea Marathon in next year’s calendar and all their future events” says the group Chairman, Naushad Merali. Sameer Africa Group announced the construction of a stadium in Nandi Hills as one way of supporting the development of Sports in the county and Kenya as a whole. He signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nandi County Governor, Dr. Cleophas Lagat, on the construction of the stadium and the marathon event. The construction of the 26,000 seater stadium, is estimated to cost Sh.60 million and expected to start in January next year. Merali added that the stadium facility will go a long way in helping tap sporting talent, not only in athletics but also other disciplines like football and netball within the cosmopolitan tea estates. While applauding the country’s sportsmen for putting Kenya on the world map, Merali paid tribute to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya Chairperson, Kipchoge Keino, for his contribution to the country’s sporting talent. He reiterated his support for the country’s athletics, which he says dates back to 2001 when they sponsored the Athletics Kenya Cross Country series through the Ever ready batteries brand, With this, they also managed to sponsor the team to the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada. Merali said that Kenyan youth have the capacity to earn the country billions of shillings through sports but many do not have access to stadiums for effective and regular training. Sameer Group also said that they will employ local and foreign coaches to identify and develop athletics talent in the country.
The winner for the 21 Km race is to receive a cash price of Kshs 500,00. Registration is on-going at Nandi Tea shop, Nandi County Sports office, AK office in Eldoret and County Sports office in Elgeyo Marakwet, rates being 300/- for the 21km race and 5000/- per group team.

Our attention has been drawn by a public demonstration organized by residents of Kaptel/ Kamoiywo ward particularly Sironoi village with regards to the state of Birei/Sironoi bridge and would like to state as follows:
THAT the bridge plays an important role in enhancing communicator and movements of farm produce in this agriculturally productive area of Chesumei sub – county.
THAT the message from the demonstrators depicted a picture of people whose patients is waning.
THAT During the recent re-classification, the road was placed under Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) and a tender for construction of the same was awarded in November 2015 at a cost of K.Shs Seven million and eight hundred thousand (7.8m). The scope of works thereto include; raising the flooded sections in both ends of the bridge with gravel, culvert installation, laying of the slab, construction of shoulders and pedestrian walk ways.
In view of the above, the County government of Nandi has instructed KERRA specifically the resident engineer Eng. Timothy Kendagor to ensure that the WORK is expedited so as to alleviate the suffering and inconvenience caused to the residents.

HANDING OVER OF KAPTUMO ShowMAP PROJECT TO THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF NANDI
Cabinet Secretary Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Willie Bett has today officially handed over Kaptumo ShowMap project in Aldai sub county to the County Government of Nandi.
Governor Cleophas Lagat welcomed the move and urged the ministry to constantly review the markets to ensure sustainability and continuity.” My government is ready to work with the National Government to ensure that farmers benefit from the farm produce and that there is access to markets” he added.
Speaking when he visited the Governor in his office, the CS emphasized on the need to diversify in Agriculture and introduce fresh produce to the market. ‘’ We need to urge farmers to plant crops that are of high value and can be exported like avocados and macadamia” he added. Mr. Bett also said that there is a growing need to partner with counties so that the Ministry can be able to mechanize agriculture, involve the youth and make it easier to access cheap credit.
So far, Ksh. 152 million has been used to construct Kibiok,Serem, Labuiywo and Kaptumo markets in the County with the aim of supporting small scale farmers in the region.
NANDI LEADERS MOURN THE DEATH OF DEPUTY SPEAKER HESBON KIPROP METTO
Nandi County Governor Dr. Cleophas Lagat has on Thursday expressed sadness over the death of Hon. Hesbon Kiprop Metto, who was until his death the Member of County Assembly for Lelmokwo/Ngechek Ward as well as the Deputy Speaker of Nandi County Assembly.
He passed on at the age of 42 years after a long illness and left behind two children.
Metto was serving his second term having been earlier elected as Lelmokwo Councillor between 2007 and 2013. He was the son of the former Mosop MP Stanley Kiptoo Metto of KapMararen Family.
While condoling the family, Governor Lagat described the departed Metto as a deligent man, a patriot and a resourceful leader who marched his words with actions “ His leadership will be missed by the family, residents of Lelmokwo/Ngechek ward, his colleagues in the Assembly and Nandi as a whole” he said..He also prayed that Almighty God grant the soul of the departed peaceful repose and for the family, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Hon. Edwin Cheluget, the Speaker of the Assembly termed the death of Metto as a big loss to the house. He extended heartfelt condolences to the late deputy speaker’s immediate family and his relatives.
His assembly contemporaries led by the leader of majority Hon. Julius Menjo described his loss as’ tragic’ saying that his contributions and wise counsel would be missed in the assembly..
ROAD WORKS OFFICIALLY COMMENCES IN KIPKAREN WARD (MOSOP SUB-COUNTY)
Road construction works have immediately kicked off at Kipkaren Ward after it was flagged off by Nandi County Governor H.E Dr Cleophas Lagat.
The County Government acquired its own road construction machineries which includes 4 graders, 2 back hoe shovels, 2 excavators, 2 rollers, 2 bulldozers and 4 tippers, a move that has been received by many as a boost to County’s infrastructure and best way to save County millions of money allocated annually towards roads maintenance.
Local leaders and Kipkaren residents who were present during the flagging off exercise praised the County Government of Nandi for demonstrating their work in action and promised to support the exercise.”I am so happy that we will now be able to transport our farm produce with ease,” said one market vendor.
Nandi governor Dr Cleophas Lagat assured all Nandi residents that his government is under control and he will ensure that all the roads in 30 Wards are improved to the best standards. He further urged the residents to see to it that no one is involved in siphoning of fuel and that anyone found guilty will face the law.
The Governor was accompanied by his deputy Dominic Biwott, CEC Roads Josiah Korir and other government officials.
NANDI COUNTY’S WINGS TO FLY BENEFICIARIES UNVEILED
The 2016 Equity’s Wings to fly sponsorship has seen 30 beneficiaries from Nandi County benefit. The students who are drawn from all the 6 Sub-Counties were today received warmly by County Governor and other officials.
Over 300 applicants from the County had applied for the sponsorship.
Branch manager Equity bank, Kapsabet Mr. Reuben Rutto said the exercise was very fair and free of any canvassing. He thanked the parents , guardians and teachers who stood by the pupils to see them through their education no matter the hardships. Mr. Rutto urged the students to be disciplined, hardworking and good Ambassadors wherever they will be.
Equity Wings to fly Programme aims at offering Scholarships to brilliant and needy students from humble background. The Foundation has been running the Programme for the last 7 years and so far, 144 students from the County have benefited from the scholarship.
Nandi County Governor H.E Dr. Cleophas Lagat who graced the event urged the students to work hard in school so as to earn what is rightfully theirs and not to engage in cheating. He emphasized on the need to ensure that only the needy students benefit from the bursaries and the Government will soon have Nandi County Education Fund Bill to assist in payment of fees. “I will ensure that Multi National Companies in the county play their Corporate Social Responsibilities for the good of the County residents.” The governor emphasized.

County Government of Nandi has heightened efforts of ensuring quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to its residents by availing drugs, equipment and consumables to all health facilities. The government is also in the process of installing modern diagnostic equipment at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital in order to boost access. The Governor, H.E. Dr. Cleophas Lagat, made an impromptu visit to the facility this afternoon to familiarize himself with the latest developments and was received by the Medical Superintendent Dr. Ishmael Aiyabei among other senior officers.
KILIBWONI HEALTH CENTRE HOSTS MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS FROM THE U.S.A
Over 800 residents of Kilibwoni Ward yesterday received free dental, eye and general treatment from a team of visiting Health Doctors from Vision of Hope for Africa, a non-governmental organization based in the Virginia State of America.
Led by Rev. Kirwa Maritim, the team of 8 comprised of Nurses, Pediatricians, Dentists and general Physicians will be in the County to offer free medical treatment at Kilibwoni Health Centre.
They intend to carry out the free medical camp from yesterday Wednesday 27 to Friday 29th ,in Kapsabet and Kabiyet Hospitals, after which they will conduct exclusively another dental camp.
One of the physicians, Dr. Ed Fisher, emphasized on the need to partner with the County Government so as to carry out exchange programs and research among the Medical Students and Practitioners. So far, the team has been able to raise approximately Kshs.5.2 M for a health facility in Kilibwoni Ward.
