The Director Nurses Services, Judith Awinja urged the nursing fraternity to seek necessary assistance, emphasizing the importance of their well-being in providing service to others. “We should strive to recognize the role that the nurses take in supporting others to remain physically, mentally and economically active.” She added.

The President National Nurses Association Council, Collins Ojwang reiterated that a healthy nation is a happier, more productive nation; and the roles that the nurses play in our health care centers across the country is immensely valuable.

We will be having open discussions with the workers across the sector leaving no one sidelined” He added.

IMMUNIZATION TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: EMPOWERING HEALTHCARE WORKERS FOR EFFECTIVE VACCINE DELIVERY

Immunization programs are the most essential instruments and achievements in public health, clubbed together with better healthcare access in their importance for longer lifespans and reduced mortality rates.

Training healthcare staff is crucial in improving the performance of immunization programs. This builds core competencies, including professional attitudes, required vaccine administration skills, and documentation skills.

In addition, it ensures a trained workforce that implements vaccine-related programs and policies. It also builds healthcare capacity to meet immunization needs at all levels, minimize attrition, and optimize outcomes.

The Department of Health and Sanitation held a two-day’s immunization training for immunization staff, public health officers and CHPs from across the entire county to enable them to identify access and utilization barriers, pinpoint priority areas and associated health centers, and form a roadmap to ensure expanded coverage in the county.

Training non-medical immunization staff such as CHPs is vital to ensure best practices are followed. Infants need to be assessed before vaccination.

Community engagement is key to the success of any immunization program. This includes education about the need for and benefits of vaccines, as well as their safety. This is essential to dispel misconceptions, reduce resistance, and improve vaccine coverage.

According to the County EPI Coordinator Susan Biwott, “Training and capacity building for immunization staff is one of the most important factors in enhancing immunization performance and effectively introducing new vaccines, technologies, practices and policies.”

“We save children’s lives through vaccination; we protect them from deadly diseases and raise caregivers’ awareness about routine vaccinations,” Mulahi an immunization officer emphasizes.

“These new skills will improve the quality of work and help us provide better immunization services.” Jeokemboi, an immunization officer.

With support from generous partners such as JHPIEGO works to improve immunization programmes and the provision of health care services through various activities, including training health workers.

Achieving and sustaining high vaccination coverage across all populations is a priority of immunization programmes in the county.

The County Government of Nandi has strengthened collaboration with media teams to mobilize the support of religious and traditional leaders as well as other opinion moulders with the capacity to influence social decisions, in order to fight intractable non-compliance to immunization in very high risk local areas within the county.

To achieve the aforestated, the County EPI Coordinator Susan Biwott who remained upbeat about the partnership with the media and Nandi based media reporters disclosed that influential women, traditional, religious and youth leaders from the identified settlements have been sensitized, on the importance of childhood immunizations since according to her ‘the forums provided the needed avenues for minority opinions to be heard and concerns raised directed to programme managers for the provision of accurate information on the benefits of immunization and vaccines as well as for other routine antigens’.

“Children everywhere deserve to live healthy lives, and routine immunizations are a proven intervention that protects them from diseases that can have a negative impact on their futures,” said Susan.

According to Jane Samoei, the County Health Promotion Officer “We need a stronger understanding of the barriers and opportunities that exist in far-to-reach areas and low-coverage settings and this learning partnership will generate data that shares how we can improve equitable access to immunization coverage.”

They were speaking during an introductory select-media sensitization meeting aimed at equipping media professionals with the tools to counter vaccine hesitancy and encourage vaccine uptake. The sensitization program targets all media reporters based in the county.

The continued media engagements will focus on reaching zero-dose children aged between 0 – 5 years, ensuring that every child receives life-saving vaccines. The media engagement is also intended to be the big leap for achieving Measles & Rubella elimination in the county by ensuring that every child under 5 years of age has completed the two-dose schedule of Measles and Rubella Containing Vaccine (MRCV).
