MOTHERS RECEIVE MOTHER AND BABY PACKS FROM SAFARICOM FOUNDATION

Mothers in Nandi can look forward not only to the arrival of their baby, but also to a special maternity care package issued by the County government. Over the past two years, mothers receive a Mama bag, which can also double as a temporary crib, filled with essential items. The pack includes a baby towel, baby wrap, spirit swabs for cord care, napkin, baby cloth, baby powder and baby oil, sponge and a pictorial guide on breastfeeding and best infant care practices.

Improving maternal health and encouraging expectant women to deliver at a health facility is a priority for the County Government of Nandi. Several interventions are being implemented to boost institutional delivery.

The Safaricom Foundation visited Kapsabet County Referral Hospital to deliver Mother and Baby Packs to mothers at the hospital maternity unit. This is in line with Safaricom’s maternal health pillar which seeks to promote Maternal, Newborn and Child Health services.

Aside from being a nice welcome-to-the-family gesture from Safaricom, the Mother and Baby Packs are meant to give each and every child an equal start in life, said Henry Kilonzo, Senior Manager in charge of Foundations Programs at Safaricom.

The newborn kits are also utilised to sensitize mothers on what they need to prepare before delivery, how to promote hygiene and how to look after their newborn babies using the contents therein.

Present at the event were the County Director for Health Dr. David Bungei, Kapsabet County Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Daniel Kemboi, County RH Coordinator Irene Berenge among other health officials.
