MOSOP DAIRY FARMERS URGED TO EMBRACE NEW TECHNOLOGIES TOWARDS DAIRY PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITABILITY
Kabiyet Dairies Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Mosop Sub-County on Thursday hosted the third Dairy Stakeholder’s Exhibition at Kabiyet grounds which ended with a call on farmers to embrace new technologies and innovations in their day to day running of the sector, as this will improve their productivity and profitability.
Officiating the farmers Field Day which attracted 523 farmers and 24 stakeholders, Nandi Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Mitei, noted that the dairy sub sector is a key source of income, among many farmers in Mosop Sub-County that immensely contribute towards attainment of food security, a key pillar in the National Government’s Big Four Agenda.
Dr. Yulita urged farmers to adopt new technologies and best practices showcased at the exhibition that will help them solve challenges affecting their production and quality of milk that sometimes compromise prices of their produce.
With the establishment of a milk processing plant in the area and availability of quality subsidized Artificial Insemination (AI) Semen by the County Government, farmers are assured of not only good breeds but also year in- year out market and good prices of their produce, and thus more residents are encouraged to take up dairy farming.
Small Holder Dairy Commercialization Programme (SDCP) County Programme Coordinator Mr. Samuel Rono revealed that the programme, which is jointly funded by the Government of Kenya and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has earmarked funds towards purchase of 3 milk coolers, 1 pasteurizer and 1 dispenser for Kabiyet Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Society.
Kabiyet dairies is one of the trailblazers, among many member primary cooperative societies forming Nandi Dairy Farmers Cooperative Union which will eventually own the Nandi Dairy Cooperative Creameries in Kabiyet.
Today’s event brought together all major stakeholders in the dairy sector including farmers, Agrodealers, technology entrepreneurs, financial institutions among others.
The overall goal of the programme is to increase the income of the poor rural household that depend substantially on production and trade of dairy and dairy related products for their livelihoods.
