COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF NANDI AND KENYA RED CROSS SOCIETY SIGN MOU TO STRENGTHEN DISASTER RESPONSE AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE
The County Government of Nandi and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) formalized a landmark partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration in disaster management, community resilience, and the delivery of essential services. The MoU, signed in Kapsabet, outlines a comprehensive framework for joint efforts in addressing critical challenges such as disaster preparedness, emergency response, and access to basic services like water, sanitation, and healthcare.
The agreement marks a significant step forward in strengthening the capacity of Nandi County and its neighboring regions to respond to disasters and climate change impacts.
The partnership will focus on building the resilience of local communities to withstand and recover from disasters and the adverse effects of climate change. This includes initiatives to improve disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
A major component of the MoU is the strengthening of ambulance and emergency pre-hospital care services through the establishment of an Emergency Operations Center (EOC). This will ensure timely and efficient responses to emergencies, saving lives and reducing the impact of disasters.
The collaboration will also prioritize improving access to water, hygiene, sanitation, health, nutrition, and social services. These efforts aim to uplift the quality of life for residents and address some of the most pressing needs in the region.
As part of its commitment to the partnership, the County Government of Nandi has provided land in Kapsabet for the establishment of a KRCS office and a Disaster Response Unit. This facility will serve as a central hub for disaster response not only in Nandi County but also for neighboring counties. The unit is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and coordination of emergency interventions, ensuring a swift and effective response to disasters across the region.
During the MoU signing and site handover ceremony in Kapsabet, the County Government team was led by H.E. Governor Stephen Sang, who emphasized the importance of the partnership in safeguarding the well-being of Nandi residents. “This collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society is a testament to our commitment to building a resilient and prosperous community. Together, we will ensure that our people are better prepared to face disasters and have access to critical services,” said Governor Sang.
The KRCS delegation was led by Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idris and Regional Chairman Moses Tanui, among other officials. Dr. Idris highlighted the significance of the partnership in addressing humanitarian challenges. “This MoU represents a shared vision to protect lives and livelihoods. By working together, we can create a lasting impact and ensure that no one is left behind in times of crisis,” he stated.
The signing of this MoU underscores the commitment of both the County Government of Nandi and the Kenya Red Cross Society to fostering sustainable development and resilience in the region. Through this partnership, the two entities aim to create a safer, healthier, and more prosperous future for the people of Nandi and beyond.
