AIR QUALITY SENSOR UNVEILED AT ELIUD KIPCHOGE SPORTS COMPLEX IN NANDI
The Cabinet Secretary for sports, youth affairs and arts Ababu Namwamba today launched an air quality sensor at Eliud Kipchoge sports complex in Kapsabet town.
The event dubbed Road to climate Cop 27: Athletics Kenya for air quality and climate action was graced by Governor Stephen Sang, representatives from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Stolkholm Environment Institute, Athletics Kenya led by the president Rtd. lieutenant General Jackson Tuwei, double Olympic and world champion in 1500M Faith Kipyegon among other guests.
The Cabinet Secretary for sports, youth affairs and arts Ababu Namwamba said that the government is targeting to plant more trees in order to combat climate change. He also promised to work with the county government of Nandi to improve the sports facilities in the region including Kipchoge Keino stadium.
Speaking during the function, governor Sang thanked the national government and athletics Kenya for unveiling the sensor in Nandi because it will benefit the athletes who train at the facility. He also requested the national government to help in the completion of Kipchoge Keino stadium. Governor Sang promised to put in place measures to combat climate change in the region.
Eliud Kipchoge sports complex in Kapsabet was funded by the county government of Nandi as a residential training facility that will be used by the athletes for training and other services.
On his part, Athletics Kenya president Rtd. Lieutenant General Jackson Tuwei said that the sensor was the 6th to be lunched in Kenya, stating that the other five sensors are in Moi international sports Centre Kasarani, Nyayo national stadium, Kenya Wildlife Services, Nakuru Athletics club, Lobo sports Centre in Eldoret and one in Nandi. He said that Nandi can host an international athletics event in the near future
because of the air quality sensor which is one of the requirements needed to host an international
event.
The sensor will be used to monitor gases which can be harmful to the environment and human health.
