The County Government of Nandi through the department of Lands, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change  in partnership with Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Equity Bank and National Environment Management Authority today held World Environment Day at Namgoi mixed secondary school, Emgwen Sub County.

World Environment Day is held every 5th of June every year with today’s theme being “Clean air our responsibility.”

Speaking during the event, Nandi Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot who was the chief guest emphasized on the need to safeguard our planet and the entire biodiversity. “It is time we embrace the use of solar power as it is less harzadous and cheaper. The recent changes in rainfall patterns witnessed can be addressed through creating awareness to the public on importance of planting indigenous trees and conserving the environment. Over 2,000 trees have been planted in Chebarbar swamp and this will indeed improve the place,” she said.

On his part Nandi County Commissioner urged those living around the forest to be the government’s watchdogs adding that the initiative of getting rid of eucalyptus trees is irreversible.

Acting CECM LENRCC Dr. Lagat appreciated the efforts being made by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). “The legislation done by NEMA on use of plastic bags is a step in the right direction. We need to restore back our environment and these can be achieved through partnership with various Stakeholders,” he said.

Chief Officer LENRCC Dr Mangira urged the community to make efforts of planting trees at the homesteads as a way of promoting greener environment.

County Director NEMA, Vincent Mahiva alluded that implementation of removing all eucalyptus trees in riparian areas is ongoing and should it face any challenge the law will apply.

Also present were County Director of Education Mr Mwashosho, Sub County Administrator Madam Keter, Ecosystem Conservator Mr.Musikiton and County Environment Officers among other invited guests.
