COOPERATIVES AND WOMEN: PROMOTING SELF-EMPLOYMENT

Cooperatives, and other collective forms of economic and social enterprise, have shown themselves as distinctly beneficial to improving women’s social and economic capacities.
Women around the world contribute to their societies in many different ways. Through cooperative organization, women are able to effect positive change in the social and physical well-being of their families, communities, and nation.
Women’s cooperatives offer self-employment opportunities that can contribute to women’s social inclusion and empowerment.
On 8 March each year the international community commemorates the International Women’s Day. To commemorate this day, Nandi women together to launch Korge Arise Women Horticulture Co-operative Society Limited, a cooperative society that will enable them to grow economically.
Speaking during the launch at the AIC Kapsabet Bible College in Kapsabet, Governor Stephen Sang underscored the need for unity among the members for the cooperative to bear fruit.
The governor lauded the women for coming together to empower themselves saying that their efforts will change the community at large because women are the pillars of society.
“As an administration, we recognize the importance of empowering women. Women are the backbone of our society, and their contribution to the economy cannot be underestimated,” said Governor Sang.
“We are committed to creating an enabling environment that supports women’s economic empowerment, and this cooperative society is an excellent example of what women can achieve when they come together,” he added.
Nandi Deputy Governor Dr Yulita Cheruiyot who is the brainchild behind Korge Arise Women Horticulture Co-operative Society Limited said the cooperative was birthed on the need to empower the local Nandi women economically.
The Deputy Governor noted that for inclusivity purposes, each woman in the cooperative will represent her family so that the men and children do not feel left out.
