A PATH TO IMPROVED HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN NANDI

Kenya’s decision to devolve government, putting much more power in the hands of local authorities, is having an impact in Nandi County. Indicators such as number of health facilities offering basic maternal and child health, and the number of women giving birth in a health facilities, have improved.

Governor Sang’s administration has placed a great emphasis on the health care sector. The Governor is aware that investment in social services will be a key component of supporting growth and development in the coming years.

The County Government of Nandi is continuing to promote an ambitious reform programme as part of its Health Care Transformation Programme. “Priority areas include public hospitals equipment, free maternity programmes, public health programmes, Immunization, Nutrition, Family Planning and combatting malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS,” said Ruth Koech, the CEC for Health.

Nearly half the departmental budget has been allocated for development, which largely focuses on the rehabilitation of health care infrastructure. As part of this process, the government has been modernising several County-owned hospitals across the six Sub Counties.

The county is certainly making strides in health care. Many basic indicators are improving, while the government boosts access and quality across the system.
